The Sky This Month · October 2026
October is defined by one event: Venus stations retrograde at 8° Scorpio on the 3rd — her detriment — and stays retrograde for 41 days through 13 November. The first four days of the month are among the toughest aspect-stretches of the year. Then: a diplomatic New Moon in Libra on the 10th, Pluto turns direct on the 15th, Scorpio season opens with an explosive Venus cazimi on the 23rd, and Mercury joins Venus retrograde on the 24th. The Full Moon lands in Taurus — Venus’s own sign — on the 26th.

A note from Steve
October is dominated by Venus ♀ retrograde. On the 3rd, Venus stations retrograde at 8° Scorpio ♏, her detriment, and stays retrograde for 41 days — through 13 November. This is the defining event of the month. Expect love, money, values, and old relationships to come up for review. Whatever has been unfinished in matters of the heart or wallet will resurface. Do not sign new contracts, do not commit to new relationships, do not make large purchases if you can help it.
The first few days of October are genuinely challenging — a rare concentration of highly discordant aspects packed into a very short window. The 30 September T-square (Mars/Pluto/Mercury) is still active, and Mars ♂ opposition Pluto ♇ peaks on the 3rd — the same day Venus stations. That is a heavy, highly discordant combination for the first days of the month. Be especially careful. On the 10th, a New Moon at 17° Libra offers an opportunity for a diplomatic reset. Then on the 15th, Pluto stations direct at 3° Aquarius after five months of retrograde — his forward motion returns.
Scorpio season begins on the 23rd. The Sun enters Scorpio and immediately meets retrograde Venus for a cazimi — an explosive hot-button moment for Venus themes: love, money, values, beauty. With Venus retrograde in her detriment and now cazimi with the Sun, this is not a quiet reset — expect flare-ups, confrontations, and buried grievances demanding to be aired. The next day, Mercury ☿ also stations retrograde in Scorpio (through 13 November), joining Venus in retrograde for the last week. On the 26th, a Full Moon in Taurus — Venus’s own sign — closes the month, right in the middle of her retrograde.
EXTREME CAUTION on and around 1–4 October. The T-square carries over from September, Mars opposes Pluto on the 3rd, and Sun opposes Saturn on the 4th — all while Venus is stationing. Power struggles, sharp words, obstacles, confrontations that get out of hand. Do not accept the invitation to fight. Do not sign or send anything you would regret. Wait it out.
Profiling the planetary conditions reveals the alchemical, magical potential of each moment in time. It enables us to avoid discord — and to identify and multiply good fortune.
I share my monthly report for free, so that as many people as possible are informed — please share it widely. Thank you!

Steve’s Reading
The sky tells two stories at once — what the planets are doing physically, and what those movements mean. Here is the month’s astrological reading, the meaning beneath the spectacle.
The story of October · Venus retrograde in Scorpio
If September was defined by the aftermath of August’s eclipses, October is defined by one event: Venus stationing retrograde at 8° Scorpio on the 3rd, and remaining retrograde for 41 days through 13 November. This is the major astrological event of the autumn.
Venus retrograde touches everything Venus rules:
- love and relationships (old flames resurface; unfinished conversations return)
- money and values (review, do not commit; no big purchases if you can help it)
- beauty, aesthetics, and self-presentation (not the time for the big haircut or the new look)
- contracts, agreements, and commitments involving other people
What makes this retrograde particularly heavy is that Venus is in Scorpio — her detriment. Venus in Scorpio is already in poor condition; Venus retrograde in Scorpio is a very difficult combination. Expect intensity, jealousy, secrets surfacing, control dynamics, and financial or relational undercurrents that were buried in September now demanding attention. On 25 October she retrogrades back into her own sign Libra — that brings some relief for the last week.
1–4 October · A challenging opening week
T-square, Mars–Pluto opposition, Sun–Saturn opposition — all while Venus stations
The first four days of October carry the toughest stretch of hard aspects we’ve seen in months. Three separate warnings stack up:
- The 30 September T-square (Mars · Pluto · Mercury) is still active in the first days of October — power struggles, sharp words, confrontations that get out of hand.
- On the 3rd, Mars opposition Pluto peaks — the day Venus also stations retrograde. This is one of the most volatile aspects in the calendar: raw force meets ruthless will. Physical accidents, violent confrontations, obsessive-compulsive reactions.
- On the 4th, Sun opposition Saturn — heaviness, delays, no’s from authority, cold conversations, a general sense of being blocked.
Practical read: do not fight, launch, sign, or push during the first four days of October. If something is blocked, let it stay blocked. If someone picks a fight with you, do not accept the invitation. Drive carefully. Sleep on any decision. The pressure eases from about the 5th onward.
10 October · New Moon at 17° Libra
An opportunity for a diplomatic reset after a heavy opening week
After the storm of 1–4 October, a much-needed reset. The New Moon at 17° Libra is quiet, diplomatic, and relational — the sign of balance, of weighing, of the pair. A good moon for: mending fences, starting a difficult conversation gently, resetting expectations in a relationship, choosing what is fair rather than what you can get away with. Not a good moon for going it alone or for burning bridges. The tone is meet in the middle.
One caution: because Venus (Libra’s ruler) is retrograde, this New Moon carries a review flavor — it is more about re-opening old conversations than starting brand-new ones. Old flames, old friends, old unfinished business are more likely to reach out.
15 October · Pluto stations direct at 3° Aquarius
Five months of retrograde end — Pluto’s forward motion returns
On 15 October, Pluto stations direct at 3°04′ Aquarius, after five months of retrograde motion. Whatever Pluto has been pulling apart or reorganising under the surface since mid-May now moves forward again. The collective and personal themes of transformation, power, and buried truth resume their forward development.
If you have planets, angles, or house cusps between 2° and 5° of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), you are being personally activated by Pluto’s station. Expect intensity — and progress. The same day brings a soft Sun sextile Jupiter — a lucky, expansive window for growth-related decisions.
16 October · Mars trine Saturn
A time for great caution — not confidence
Mars (now in Leo) forms a trine to Saturn (in Aries, in his fall). Normally a Mars–Saturn trine is read as steady, disciplined, sustained drive. This one is different. Saturn is in extremely poor condition in Aries — a sign that opposes everything Saturnian: patience, caution, structure, limits. The trine does not make him safe; it just hands his weakness a wider channel to flow through. Treat this as a time for real caution, not confidence: Saturn in fall will not reward bold action the way a well-placed Saturn would. Hold back, pace yourself, and let the week’s decisions be modest ones.
23 October · Sun into Scorpio & Venus cazimi
Scorpio season opens with a Venus reset — but not a quiet one
On 23 October the Sun leaves Libra and enters Scorpio. Scorpio season begins. The tone of the year turns deeper, more private, more emotionally intense — Scorpio is the sign of depth, of buried truth, of what happens beneath the surface.
The same day, the Sun catches up to retrograde Venus for their conjunction — a cazimi. A cazimi is the moment a planet sits in the heart of the Sun, within 17′ of exact conjunction. In traditional astrology, a cazimi is usually a very powerful position — but that assumes a well-placed planet. This one is different. Venus is retrograde in her detriment (Scorpio), which means the intensity of the cazimi lands on a planet already in poor condition. Rather than empowering Venus, it turns up the volume on everything that has been simmering during her retrograde: the buried grievances, the money and relationship pressure, the self-worth questions. What has been surfacing during the first three weeks of the retrograde comes to a hot, uncomfortable peak on this day.
Use the day carefully. This is not a moment for conversation, confrontation, or committing to anything — but it is a strong moment for standing firm in your values. When old material surfaces around love, money, or self-worth, notice it, sit with it, and hold your ground. Watch, listen, take notes. Act later.
24 October · Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio
Mercury joins Venus retrograde for the last week of October
The day after the Sun enters Scorpio, Mercury stations retrograde at 21° Scorpio. His retrograde runs through 13 November — the same day Venus stations direct. For the last week of October and first two weeks of November, both Venus and Mercury are retrograde, and both are in or headed to Scorpio.
Traditional Mercury retrograde guidance applies with extra weight: expect delays, miscommunications, technical failures, and old conversations resurfacing. Back up devices. Confirm appointments. Do not launch, do not sign anything that cannot wait, and do not press send in anger. Because Mercury is in Scorpio — the sign of buried truth — expect secrets to surface, especially about money and relationships.
26 October · Full Moon in Taurus
A lunar spotlight on Venus’s retrograde themes
The Full Moon of 26 October falls in Taurus — the domicile of Venus — right in the middle of her retrograde. That is a powerful lunar spotlight on Venus’s themes: money, values, body, earthly comforts, beauty and pleasure. Whatever has been quietly surfacing since Venus stationed on the 3rd reaches a lunar peak here.
Full Moons in Taurus are traditionally stable, grounded, sensory — the Moon is exalted in Taurus, in one of her strongest positions. She wants what is real, what is enduring, what can be touched and held. Combined with the Venus retrograde, this Full Moon asks: what is worth keeping? what is worth paying for? what actually feels good? Watch what stands up in the light of a Taurus Moon.
Draconids & Orionids · Two meteor showers this month
A moonless Draconid peak on 8–9 October, and the Orionids on 21–22 October
The Draconids run 6–10 October, peaking on the night of 8–9 October — right around the New Moon, meaning excellent moonless conditions for observing. Under a dark country sky expect 6–10 meteors per hour. The Draconids are one of the very few showers that peak in the evening before midnight, not the pre-dawn hours — the radiant sits high in the northwest at nightfall. Bundle up, face away from any light-dome, let your eyes adapt for twenty minutes without a phone, and look up.
The Orionids run 2 October – 7 November, peaking on the night of 21–22 October. Rates are 10–20 meteors per hour under a dark sky. The waxing gibbous Moon sets shortly after midnight on peak night, so the best window is pre-dawn — 2 AM to sunrise. The radiant is in Orion, high in the south by 3 AM. The Orionids are debris from Halley’s Comet, one of the two showers each year (the other is the Eta Aquariids in May) that Earth crosses through Halley’s trail.
Two meteor showers, two very different windows.
The Draconids under a moonless sky, the Orionids in the pre-dawn.
Dress warmly. Look up. Let the eyes adapt.

The month week by week
The same October, mapped onto your calendar — for planning rather than reading.
Week 1 · 1–7 OctoberA challenging opening week
The toughest stretch of the month. Mars opposition Pluto on the 3rd (the day Venus stations retrograde at 8° Scorpio), Sun opposition Saturn on the 4th, with the September T-square still live. Not a week to launch, sign, confront, or push. On the 3rd, Last Quarter Moon in Cancer. Pressure eases from the 5th; the Draconids peak on the night of 8–9 October under a dark, moonless sky.
Week 2 · 8–15 OctoberNew Moon & Pluto direct
A reset week. The Draconids peak on 8–9 October — look northwest in the evening. On the 10th, New Moon in Libra — a diplomatic reset, though Venus retrograde gives it a review flavor. The headline event of the week falls on the 15th: Pluto stations direct at 3° Aquarius — forward motion returns after five months. The same day, a soft Sun sextile Jupiter opens a lucky, expansive window.
Week 3 · 16–22 OctoberMars–Saturn trine & Venus–Pluto square
A quieter week in sequence, but still demanding care. On the 16th, Mars trine Saturn — read cautiously: Saturn is in fall, and the trine does not make him safe. On the 20th, Venus (rx) square Pluto — the second hit of this intense aspect: jealousy, obsession, control dynamics around love or money. The Orionids peak on the night of 21–22 October — best pre-dawn, after the Moon sets.
Week 4 · 23–31 OctoberScorpio season, cazimi & Mercury rx
A dense final week. On the 23rd, Sun into Scorpio and Venus cazimi on the same day — an explosive hot-button moment; not a quiet reset. On the 24th, Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio — joining Venus for the last week. On the 25th, Venus retrogrades back into Libra. On the 26th, Full Moon in Taurus — a lunar spotlight on Venus’s themes.

The wider sky
On 15 October, Pluto stations direct at 3° Aquarius — the first outer planet to turn direct in months. The other three remain retrograde: Saturn in mid-degrees of Aries (still in his fall); Neptune in early Aries; and Uranus in late Gemini. Pluto’s direct station is the most significant outer-planet event of the month.
Jupiter continues his year-long tour of Leo — direct and moving forward, a warm and generous influence all month. He is joined by Mars (also in Leo since 27 September) — the two of them together supporting bold action, creative expression, and confident forward movement, especially for anyone with planets in the fire signs.
The next eclipse season opens in February 2027, on the Leo–Aquarius axis. Until then, no eclipses — a five-month pause.
Pluto direct on the 15th. The forward story resumes.
Mars and Jupiter together in Leo for the whole month —

Featured object · Venus retrograde in Scorpio
3 October – 13 November 2026 · 41 days in her detriment

Roughly every 18 months, Venus stations retrograde for about 40 days. Astronomically, this is Venus overtaking Earth on the inside track of the solar system — her apparent backward motion is the moment she passes between us and the Sun. Astrologically, it is Venus’s great review period: everything she rules — love, money, values, beauty, what we find pleasurable — is pulled inward, examined, and (sometimes painfully) re-evaluated.
This particular retrograde is heavier than most, because it happens in Scorpio — the sign of Venus’s detriment, where she is already in poor condition. Scorpio is the opposite of Taurus (where Venus is at home, enjoying earthly pleasures). In Scorpio, Venus has to deal with buried material: hidden resentments, old wounds around trust and intimacy, financial undercurrents, shared resources, and anything that has been quietly festering beneath a relationship’s surface.
What has been simmering becomes visible.
What has been avoided becomes unavoidable.
What we actually value becomes the only question that matters.
How to work with the retrograde. Review, do not commit. Reconnect, do not launch. Repair, do not rebrand. Old flames and old business coming back around are the signature of a Venus retrograde — expect it, and decide carefully which to engage. On 25 October she retrogrades back into her domicile Libra — a softer, more diplomatic placement for the last two and a half weeks of the cycle. The retrograde ends on 13 November, the same day Mercury also stations direct.

Planets
All sign positions use the tropical zodiac, the standard for Western astrology.
The almanac that follows is a record of what’s worth stepping outside for this month: the Draconid and Orionid meteor showers, Venus still blazing in the western evening sky (even in retrograde), and Jupiter rising brighter each morning as he approaches his December opposition.
- Mercury ☿
- Low in the western evening twilight through most of the month, in Libra then Scorpio. Stations retrograde on the 24th at 21° Scorpio — through 13 November.
- Venus ♀
- Still an evening star, blazing in the west after sunset but fading as she approaches inferior conjunction. Stations retrograde on the 3rd at 8° Scorpio — through 13 November. Retrogrades back into Libra on the 25th.
- Mars ♂
- In Leo all month, joining Jupiter — two fire-sign planets together. Low in the western evening twilight, hard to spot physically but astrologically a warm, confident presence.
- Jupiter ♃
- A morning planet, rising earlier each night in Leo. Brightening steadily as he approaches his December opposition. Honey-coloured, unmistakable, high in the pre-dawn sky by month’s end.
- Saturn ♄
- Still near opposition — up almost all night in Pisces. Rings beautifully open. Point south in the mid-evening for a splendid telescope view.
- Neptune ♆
- Just past September’s opposition, up most of the night in Pisces — still an excellent month for finding him. Faint (magnitude 7.7); binoculars or a small scope.
- Uranus ♅
- Rising in the late evening in late Gemini — retrograde all month. Magnitude 5.7; a good binocular target in dark skies.
- Pluto ♇
- Stations direct on the 15th at 3° Aquarius after five months of retrograde — the significant outer-planet event of the month.
